Dear Colleague
A little good news for a change. The Pay Review Body (PRB) has reported back on the unsocial hours issue.
In general, they have recommended that there is no case for wholesale reforms of Agenda for Change unsocial hours, and that Agenda for Change is not the main barrier to 7 day services. They did query the paying of a whole shift as unsocial when only half a shift is worked in unsocial hours, and payments for evening work 8:00pm to 10:00pm. However, the main focus is on consultant opt out for weekends which you may have seen in the news recently. PRB has suggested that any further discussions on this takes place in the found of normal pay discussions and regular staff council processes.
They also picked up on some of the issues that we have identified such as morale and the number of staff that say they will not work unsocial hours were they not to receive payment. They also agreed that it will take additional staff to run 7 day services.
I think we can welcome this as good news. I do not think it is going away forever but it is a helpful outcome for our members and could have been a lot worse. There will be a press release from the National Office shortly.
