UN ANTI RACISM DAY – SATURDAY 19TH MARCH 2022, LONDON

The train set off for London at 9am with a North West delegation of 90 people. Unison Pennine Care branch sponsored 4 seats on the train which was made up of many different people; students, asylum seekers, refugees, trade union activists, community groups, Care for Calais – all different ages from different walks of life but bound together by our belief in the key demands of the protest – #ALL Refugees Welcome, and #Black Lives Matter.

The sun was shining as we stood together and marched the streets of London. Sometimes people ask ‘why do you bother demonstrating, what’s the point, it changes nothing.’ That’s just plain wrong! Any progressive social change has in its wake a history of people coming together and protesting, not accepting, not rolling over and silently complying with injustice.

On a personal level, the energy and joy felt when on a demonstration leads to a sense of solidarity that’s hard to beat. It energises and consolidates a determination to take the values back into everyday life, into the workplace and call out prejudice/racism when it’s seen or heard. Anger without hope leads to despair, and there’s a lot to be angry about right now. If you need somewhere to place those feelings and use them constructively, come and join Unison and have a voice in your Branch and get involved as much, or as little as you like. May be come on the next Demo?!
