In 2010-11, over 1000 more violent attacks against NHS staff were recorded compared to the previous year. NHS Protect, the official body set up to monitor this information, reported that the number of incidents in England was 57,830 in 2010-11, up from 56,718 the year before.
In Pennine Care NHS Trust, the number of physical assaults rose too – 795 according to last year’s figured, compared to 790 in 2009-2010.
UNISON is calling for urgent action on a national level to stem the rising tide of violence against mental health workers and other NHS staff. However, we know that the most difference is often made locally, so we have launched a major campaign in Pennine Care NHS Trust to tackle the issue.
